This file describes three types of variables: 1. variables (such as the number of non-primary sex partners reported during the baseline interview) that were created from the responses of one or more questions in a given form, 2. variables (such as "language of interview" on the 6-month interview response form) that contain the responses to questions for which there were no question numbers on the relevent forms, and 3. variables were calculated across a number of different forms or during the administative process of the study that together offer basic background and administrative information about the participants. Within each section the variable names are listed alphabetically. ******************************** * basic participant background * * and administrative variables * ******************************** age: age of participant at initial baseline visit age=(year of date00) - (year-of-birth) year-of-birth results from comparing the following values of five year-of-births: (year of adate) - (question 2 in the enrollment eligibility form) (year of edate) - (variable indicated as 'age' on the 6-month std test) question 3 in the enrollment eligibility form question 1 in the 6-month interview response form question 1 in the 12-month interview response form if all nonmissing year-of-births from the five are the same, then use that value if not, then use the value that occurred the most often if the frequency of that value if equal to or greater than half the number of nonmissing year-of-birth values otherwise, use the median value of all nonmissing year-of-birth values (rounded down) couple: if the participant enrolled as part of a couple 0=no 1=yes couplenu: site-unique couple number for a participant is the same for the two participants that comprise the couple is zero if participant is not part of a couple and enrolled as an individual instead date00: date of initial interview in baseline wave date06: date of initial interview in 6-month wave date12: date of initial interview in 12-month wave gender: sex of respondent group: randomly assigned treatment group hic c&t id: site-unique participant identification number site and id together identify uniquely individual participants range of values: 2000-2999 for men and women who enrolled as part of a couple male couple members received even id numbers in this range female couple members recevied odd id numbers in this range (one digit higher than that of the male couple member) 6000-6999 for men who enrolled individually 7000-7999 for women who enrolled individually site: the site the participant attended site and id together identify uniquely the individual participants _b: if attended baseline wave 1=if attended 0=if not 1 _6: if attended 6-month wave 1=if attended 0=if not 1 _12: if attended 12-month wave 1=if attended 0=if not 1 **************************************** * baseline enrollment eligibility form * **************************************** (no variables created) ************************************ * baseline interview response form * ************************************ bdate: date of interview (baseline interview response form) beintc: were there any episodes of sexual intercourse with a commercial partner in the two months prior to the baseline interview?
