Dissemination Manager
Pamela DeCarlo, BA, is Dissemination Manager for the Technology and Information Exchange (TIE) Core at CAPS where she creates and oversees communication activities. Her specialty is translating scientific reports and articles into concise and understandable materials for non-academic service agencies and the general public.
In 1995, Ms. DeCarlo debuted the HIV Prevention Fact Sheets, which she writes, edits and designs. The Fact Sheets have been used by a wide range of audiences, from local service agencies creating HIV prevention program, to the national Red Cross in its HIV prevention training courses. Ms. DeCarlo edits the Science to Community four-page project reports. She has written manuals on formative research, community collaborative research, HIV prevention for HIV+ persons and prevention needs of HIV+ young African American men.
For the past twelve years, Ms. DeCarlo has been involved in the electronic dissemination of HIV prevention information. In 1995 she created the CAPS website, the first website in the US specifically dedicated to HIV prevention research. CAPS was the only non-governmental website listed on the White House Office of AIDS website. She still manages and edits the CAPS website. Ms. DeCarlo also helped create the award-winning HIV InSite in 1997, where she was the original editor for the Prevention forum. Ms. DeCarlo designed and produced a CD-rom of all of CAPS’s HIV prevention research materials.
Ms. DeCarlo has written articles for a wide variety of newspapers, magazines and journals, including the Harvard AIDS Review, FOCUS, San Diego Union Tribune, Journal of the American Medical Association, AIDS Education and Prevention, American Journal of Public Health, TB & HIV Quarterly and the Washington Blade.
