International Core
CAPS has historically had a primarily domestic focus, but this has changed substantially over the past decade with approximately 56% of CAPS scientists and 80% of fellows now having significant research programs overseas. To ensure quality and relevance, CAPS International Core's primary strategy has been to provide scientific and administrative support to CAPS scientists, fellows, and graduate students during grant development and implementation.
Consultations
Our Directors (Drs. Rutherford & Mandel) and Regional Research Directors (Dr. Lindan for Asia, Dr. McFarland for Africa, Eastern Europe, Middle East & Central Asia; Dr. Page-Shafer for Latin America & the Caribbean) are available for consultations during grant concept development and implementation. Dr. Mandel and Ms. Sehgal have extensive experience in administering international research, including budgetary development, financing, accounting, transportation, hiring overseas personnel and human subjects approval processes. Contact Ritu Sehgal to set up a consultation.
Presentations/Workshops
- Visiting international colleagues and collaborators to the general CAPS community.
- International research workshops. We are planning a series of internationally focused workshops such as conducting human research in international settings, and best practices for international subcontracts, budget development and management, and hiring overseas personnel.
Publications
The International Core has produced several Special Issues in leading journals.
- AIDS and Behavior - Volume 10, no.7, July 2006
- AIDS and Behavior – Volume 6, no. 3 , Sept 2002
- AIDS and Behavior – Volume 4, no. 1, March 2000
- AIDS - Volume11 Supplement 1, September 1997
- AIDS – Volume 9, Supplement 1, July 1995
Research & Training
- I-TAPS program. Our highly successful model of research training in AIDS prevention research for developing world scientists that strategically selects trainees geographically and thematically.
- Cochrane Collaborative Review Group on HIV Infection and AIDS. We update our registry of HIV/AIDS intervention trials, and conduct searches of key AIDS specialty journals and conference proceedings. We also access randomized clinical trials from other databases, e.g. IndMED (which indexes 70 Indian journals not found on Medline). We provide a compendium of best practices that combines Cochrane systematic reviews with detailed bibliographies on promising interventions. www.igh.org/cochrane
